Through a series of lively and interesting activities the children will build their knowledge of oceans and seas around the world. They will begin by recapping what they already know about the seas that surround the UK. They will then begin to develop their knowledge of the seas, oceans and continents of the world. They will begin to understand the different environments these represent and how they affect life on land as well as at sea. They will develop their geographical skills and build up their knowledge of food chains, exploration, and evolution! We will also investigate how waves are caused and how they move. Inspired by the stormy seascapes of J. M. W. Turner we will use a variety of techniques to create textured watercolour paintings and turn them into sea-storm collages.
In science we will learn about the fascinating plants and animals that are adapted to live in the different oceans of the world. We will label simple maps, create diagrams of food chains and find out about the fascinating marine life that is found in our oceans. Year 2 will also identify the plants and animals that live at the seaside and find out how to care for them.
